The Devil w/ 3 Golden Hairs

The intended audience of this film seems to be the middle class who could potentially identify with the working class of the movie. This is identifiable as a DEFA production because, as in Snow White, the film seems to involve a slapstick element even though it is acting as propaganda of East Germany. The medium is an advantage to the propaganda effort because not much is let up to the imagination, so whatever image the DEFA wants to portray is seen by the audience.

  1. I agree. The target audience seems to be families of the working or middle classes. Working and middle-class values are highlighted, such as working hard. Also, there are certain class stereotypes in it, that only those classes would appreciate and be okay with it: such as the drunk king. The king's drunkenness signifies the flamboyancy and lack of seriousness of royalty in certain countries. Such a notion advocates communist governments, as it belittles monarchy.

It is clearly a DEFA production because of its comedic elements. Also, how magic is reduced, and not made to seem probable at all.

The medium of film works to DEFA's advantage, because they can illuminate anything to their intended audience: anyone in East Germany. Film was clearly used as propaganda, to brainwash people into believing in the ideals of communism, and to reject governments such as monarchy and democracy.

  2. Also, to touch on the point about comparison to DEFA's version of Snow White, they are both similar in their highlighting communist values, such as hardwork, as well as their use of comedy and satire.
