I would like to begin by thinking that Keene would portray the witch as a normal woman, who is not necessarily evil, as he does in The Juniper Tree.  I feel Hansel and Gretel's mother herself would be the more "witchy" of the two.  As for time and place, I feel that once again it would be very undefined.  Although we would hear of the famine, there would be no other characters around, and no trace of other humanity except for those who are the main part of the story.  The landscape would be bare, and desolate looking.  Additionally, based on what we have seen of Keene, Hansel and Gretel may be portrayed as the villian as well as the innocent, depending on the portion of the movie taking place.

  1. Yes, I agree that Keene would depict the witch as somewhat of a normal woman, but with some creepy countenance about her. The children would probably be somewhat like the little boy in the Juniper Tree movie-- slightly disobedient, but also endearing. Gretel would probably be more of the main character. She would also probably be the sibling who is more out of line, because she would have to "learn her lesson" by being frightened out of her mind by the witch in worrying about how the witch plans to slaughter her brother. Keene would probably zero-in on the relationship between Hansel and Gretel-- like he does on the one between the stepsister and the little boy in the Juniper Tree. Sibling relationships seemed to predominate in The Juniper Tree film.

As far as the setting goes, I see Keene keeping it austere so as to remain authentic-- in some unspecific forest, and medieval-looking.

  2. Hi Nikki and Emily,
Nice to see that you have already got the discussion going. I wonder what everybody else has to say...

  3. Nikki,
I think the idea of having Hansel and Gretel portrayed as villains is a fantastic idea. It would add a high degree of realism, especially given the environment that the story is taking place during. My only question is how would Hansel and Gretel be portrayed as villains? (I ask because although we can see the boy in the Juniper Tree being bratty, he is certainly just a scared little boy who has a wild imagination and certainly does not deserve to die.) My fear is that the same may happen in this story (especially if the witch is not a witch). Perhaps they could brutally kill the woman they feel is a witch (throw in an element of cannibalism and we can have all sorts of physiological analysis fun) Just some thoughts... great work!
